As this was a cooking show our chef Hannah didn’t want to look too glam. After all who wears full nighttime glitz in the kitchen. So the look I chose is fresh, using lots of creams, brown and neutral tones to give her a groomed appearance.

Hannah’s hair was very fine and lackluster, so my first thought was to give it some oomph with body building rollers, but even after leaving them to ‘set’ it was clear the bounce was not going to last and I didn’t want to risk a droopy barnet on set. So I quickly swapped onto plan B – the side pony! You really can’t go wrong with this style. It’s less severe that a regular ponytail and not as little girl cute as bunches.

When your working on film sets it’s important to choose a hairstyle for your model that isn’t going to drop, loose it’s curl or change in anyway as the day goes on. This is because each shot may have to be taken several times and in the end they’ll edit the best clips together to make a continues piece of footage. So if the hair changed from one clip to the next it would ruin the continuity of the video.

As you can see from the stage set photos, Hannah had about 6 lights on her and the heat from both these and the cooker is like being in a sauna. So as her make-up artist standing on hand with extra powder to freshen her look was a must.

At the moment it’s hard to remember a time before the rain, but in those two weeks of summer we had at the end of March I was down at Stoodleigh Court near Tiverton on a fashion shoot for Laura Burling designs. We had no idea how lucky we were with the gorgeous sunshine as most of the photographs were shot outside, taking full advantage of the beautiful countryside views.

This was Laura’s first collection and was aimed at all those glamorous ladies who like to be seen sipping champagne at the races. Each dress used soft fabrics to create a floaty feel while also incorporating a hidden corset, to secretly pull-in and create an enviable shape without needing to hit the gym!

Having always been involved in fashion Laura always knew she wanted to design her own range, but it wasn’t until she relocated to Devon and moved away from her work in Selfridges London, that she decided to take the plunge!

For the make-up Laura wanted a classic, timeless feel. So I designed a look using a few of my favourite techniques and incorporating classic elements like a flick of black eyeliner and a bright berry lip colour.

I love a strong line of eyeliner because it defines the shape of the eye and by continuing the line into a feline flick I can also elongate the shape. I applied the eyeliner with a brush for a precision line and used one with a gel texture because this dries fast, ensuring that the colour won’t run in the hot sunshine.

Our model had the most amazing killer cheekbones and so to really highlight these I sculpted their shape using a technique called contouring. This is where you use a darker colour under the cheekbone and a lighter colour above to enhance the shape and make them really stand out.

Finally the lovely red lip colour added a vintage twist to the look. This bright Trans Siberian by NARS and is said to be a favourite of Dita Von Tease who is know for her classic vintage style.

The 2012 spring / summer catwalks have made kohl liner the star of this years shows. As this season smoky eyes were back and BIGGER than ever! All of a sudden subtle styles looked so out dated as models were spotted on the runways with seriously smudged-out eyes. This dramatic style is all about expertly smudged black eyeliner and blending is the key to creating it successfully.

For the Moschino catwalk make-up artist Tom Pecheux create a lived-in feel with kohl pencil smudged all around the lash line and over the eyelids. For Iceberg Charlotte Tilbury intensified her smoky eye with two layers of kohl pencil and a dark blue shadow. While Hannah Murray upped the glamour at Just Cavalli with a mix of thickly applied liner around the eye and cream shadow in bronze over the lid.

This new rock-chick look is mostly fashioned in bold black coal, but as senior make-up artist at MAC Neil Young explains, “the black eye is really a technique and not a colour and can be created in any shade”. So for a twist on traditional black, there are plenty of tempting dark brown, charcoal and navy shades around this season.

If you want to create the look at home, start with a black kohl pencil generously applied in a thick line to the upper and lower lashes. Then using a brush gently smudge outwards until the edges of the pencil are diffused. Finally sweep over an eye shadow in a rich dark colour and apply several coats of mascara.

However, if you think this catwalk look is a little too strong, you can soften it by using a black pencil that has a little bit of sparkle added to it, which will lift the colour and give a wonderful smoky shimmer.

You scoffed through Christmas, drank yourself silly through New Year and now your face is shamelessly giving away your wicked ways! You thought a new year detox was your friend but not only has all that deep cleansing brought your toxins out in a sea of spots but your willpower is starting to dwindle.

Who wouldn’t want clear, glowing skin – it’s certainty at the top of my wish list. But forget doing it the right way. For those of us who aren’t blessed with it naturally, here are a few tips on how to fake it!

1) Too many late nights are going to leave you with tired eyes and dark eye bags, so a light reflecting under eye concealer is a must-have. Not only will it brighten your dark circles, but it will also illuminate your eyes for a brighter more wide-eyed appearance. These concealers will often come in a pink or peach based colour, as this will neutralize under-eye darkness.

2) Too much alcohol will leave your skin looking sallow and lack luster. So if your skin has lost its glow you need to brighten your completion with an luminous base. These bases contain shimmery pigments to give a pearliest glimmering look. Used under your regular foundation they’ll give your skin a subtle shine to give it back its sparkle.

3) Too much caffeine will dehydrated skin so regularly spritz it with lot’s of natural goodies, like those found in Liz Earle’s Instant Boost or MAC Mineralize Charged Water. Refreshers like these will add radiance, set makeup and revitalize your skin. Just spray it on and your skin will drink it up!

4) Forgetting to take your make-up off can cause breakouts and make pores more visible. But luckily a good makeup primer will hide imperfections like, large pores, skin discolorations and so on. My favorites are Benefit’s POREfessional primer and Clarins Instant Smoothing Perfecting Touch base.

5) Spots need a high coverage concealer, but never use this as an all over foundation or you’ll look like you’ve had a run in with a cement mixer. Look at your face carefully to work out where you need coverage and where you don’t. And make sure your concealer is made with zit-zapping salicylic acid, which will prevent future breakouts.

6) Dull skin can be given its glow back with a little highlighter. Highlighting is a technique that brings your face and make-up to life. By applying a shimmery creamy coloured powder along the cheekbones, underneath the brow bone and also in the inner corner of your eyes you can both sculpt and bighting your face.

7) Chapped, dry or flaky lips can look thinner and more wrinkled than normal so for emergency rehydration, pierce a vitamin E capsule, squeeze out the contents and apply to lips. Then apply a moisturizing lipstick with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid to bind pout-boosting water to your mouth.

Hi Eve,

I just wanted to thank you for all your efforts on the 4th February. Amongst all the chaos you created make-up like none of us have worn before. We all felt amazing and it stayed put for the entire day. You must have felt like the cycle of people was never ending but we all appreciated it hugely so thank you from all six of us. If you’d like to see a piccie I’ve attached one of Paul and myself as we walked back down the aisle.

Thank you once again. I’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone looking for a make-up artist.

Kind regards
Rachel

It took several reassuring phone calls for Jo to feel confident enough to come and meet me for a makeover. She’d had a few bad experiences getting her make-up done at beauty counters and was also really worried about blemishes on her skin. But the trial went really well and afterwards she met her photographer www.alexander-oliver.com for her pre wedding photo shoot.

We were both really pleased with how the photos came out. The gorgeous slate grey eyeshadow she chose really shows off her eyes and there is not a blemish in sight!

The hit TV show Mad Men has started a trend and brought the 60’s style back into fashion. Followed in quick succession by The Hour and now Pan Am it looks like 60’s mania is here to stay! These shows are opening our eyes to the forgotten part of the era: early 60’s. A time before the mini skirt and hippy craze. And a far cry from the stereotypical heavily made up look of Twiggy we have all come to know and love from the late 60’s.

TV Show Mad Men – Set in the early 60′s

The early 60’s was still very much influenced by the sophistication of the 50’s and took its cue from role models like the first lady: Jacky Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. The flick of black eyeliner was still popular and although the lips were softer they were still in berry colours. But as the era continued the mood in make-up moved away from the prim and proper appearance of the 50’s and took on a new rebellious edge, which was also reflected in the liberated attitude of the era.

Jackie Kennedy

Suddenly the eyeliner, which had been drawn just neatly above the eye, was now all around it, creating a darker more intense look. At this time girls just couldn’t get enough of black mascara and piled on so many layers their lashes started to clump together and became spiky. Often they’d also wear false eyelashes and then coat these with mascara too!

To keep the emphasis on the eyes the rest of the face was kept light. Porcelain skin and sugary pink lips kept the colours of the face toned down and drew your eye up towards the dark lashes. 60’s icon Twiggy was best known for this look as she made full advantage of her large, doe like eyes that carried the heavy make-up so well.

Fashion Model Twiggy – Showing late 60′s make-up

By now there was a huge contrast in the early decade and the latter part, but although the decade continued to change intensely the rules of make-up stayed the same and stuck to a uniform of dark eyes and pale lips.

Although these looks now seem out-dated, there are elements of 60’s style that have never gone out of date. Many modern styles take inspiration from the 60’s, but it’s the timeless elegance and clean simplicity of the makeup of the early 60′s that is most relevant and wearable today.

However, even the heavily made up dark eyed style of Twiggy can be toned down to a more day-to-day look and by combining some of the popular colours of the decade like black eyeliner with soft grey and light pink eye shadow you could have a 60’s inspired look with a modern elegant twist.

Quite often bridal shoots are very white so it was a refreshing change to have so many vibrant colours in this Moroccan themed shoot for the January issue of WED Magazine.

Set in the stunning Tunnel Beaches venue, the luxurious decoration and beautiful dresses in jewel tones really bring this shoot to life.

Colour is the focal point of Moroccan decorating and our stylist Sarah used lamps made from colored glass, cushions and umbrellas to give light, colour and texture to the pictures.

For the make-up I outlined the eyes in deep purple, creating a cat’s eye shape in kohl for a modern twist on a traditional Moroccan style. While the hair stylist Claire skillfully wove the hair in to beautiful fishtail plaits.

Lastly our photographer Lucy used a variety of camera angles to capture the moment and put the magic of Morocco in every shot.

It was a brave move for Kate to do her own make-up, especially when there were two billion people scrutinizing her every move. And there was no doubt that Kate looked amazing on her wedding day, but in my personal opinion the make-up was not blended very well.

Where I think she was right:

She was right to wear her make-up a little heavier than usual because your wedding day is the one-day when you’re going to need a little extra. Most of your guests will be seeing you from afar and so for your eyes to stand out they’ll need to be a little darker. And you also have to remember that flash photography will fade the make-up in your photographs.

Where she went wrong (in my opinion):

Wedding make-up needs to be soft and enhance your best features without making you look too over done. There should be no harsh edges or thick strong lines and it should be perfectly blended so that it looks like its part of you.

To me Kate’s harsh black eyeliner didn’t look flattering because it was not blended. To make the eyeliner look more gentle and shaded you could smudge the pencil line with an angled brush and go over the top with a little eye shadow powder to set the product in place and soften the look.

Her blusher was also too strong in a thick stripe across her cheekbone. A more natural application would have had a soft blurred edge, like a natural flush would have.

However, I love the fundamentals of this look– Kate really couldn’t go wrong with a smoky grey eye and soft pink lips. It’s a perfect look for any bride.
